Cities in Romania - true city break destinations

20/Apr/2023

Both due to Romania's accession to the European Union, as well as due to the increase in the number of air connections and, last but not least, the development of tourism, more and more Romanian cities have started to become, step by step, city break destinations. In most cases, these cities are also served by an international airport. And last but not least, in all these cities the car rental service (rent-a-car) Perpetoo.com is at your disposal.

If we made you curious, here are these cities:

Bucharest

For about 10 years, the share of leisure tourists, who come to Bucharest or benefit from at least one night's accommodation in the capital of Romania, has been increasing.

Here is the typology of tourists arriving in Bucharest:

1. Business and event tourists, with a share of 55% from total number of tourists

2. City break tourists, with a share of 25%

3. Tourists who take part in Romanian circuits and choose 1-2 nights of accommodation in Bucharest, 15% share

4. Other categories of tourists: concerts, visits to friends, etc.

This means that around 300,000 foreigners come to Bucharest as a city break destination. The main attractions and benefits of Bucharest are, at present:

1. The Old City Center – bars, restaurants, clubs, beautiful buildings, some of them 100-250 years old.

2. Nightlife, non-stop. In Bucharest you can eat, drink, buy something at any time.

3. Good prices, low cost of living compared to Western European standards.

4. Rich calendar of events.

5. Cultural life.

6. Shopping (including malls).

7. The city is safe.

8. Many parks and green spaces.

Currently, Bucharest can compete with other tourist cities in the region, such as Bratislava, Budapest or Zagreb. An advantage is that, in many international charts, it is recognized as the cheapest large city in the European Union, in terms of services.

Almost 40 airlines operate from Otopeni Henri Coandă International Airport, of which 8 are low cost. The main destinations in terms of number of flights are London, Vienna, Frankfurt, Rome, Istanbul, Amsterdam and Paris; in total almost 70 direct destinations are operated. Also, 18 international hotel brands are present in Bucharest.

In Bucharest, cars can be rented directly from verified local owners through the Perpetoo.com rent-a-car platform, with drop-off areas at Otopeni Airport, North Train Station or Central locations.

Sibiu

It stood out as Romania's first international tourist city, due to the fact that, in 2007, it was the Cultural Capital of Europe. Sibiu County was visited in 2022 by 163,940 foreign tourists, of which about half (80,000) preferred a city break in the city of Sibiu.

Sibiu has a major advantage: the rich calendar of events, transmitted in time. The International Theater Festival or TIFF are just two examples.

Also, Sibiu has hotels, guesthouses, villas and hostels for all budgets, and nearby is the famous rural tourism area Mărginimea Sibiului. In addition, Sibiu has several chain hotels: Hilton, Ramada, Ibis or Golden Tulip.

Cluj-Napoca

It became famous through music festivals such as Untold or Electric Castle and became a city of concerts or sporting events. Cluj-Napoca received 135,299 foreign tourists last year (2022), some of whom came for events and some for business.

Also, Cluj-Napoca has a wide variety of hotels (about 40; at the beginning of the 1990s Bucharest had no more than 50!) and hostels; as international brands can be mentioned Doubletree by Hilton, Ramada, Hampton by Hilton or Golden Tulip. The capital of Transylvania region is also the first "smart city" in Romania.

Braşov

Brașov County is located in the center of the country, being an attraction for both foreign and Romanian tourists. A large part of them chooses the Brașov municipality but also the Bran-Moieciu rural tourism area or the Predeal and Poiana Brașov resorts. From June of this year (2023), Brașov will also have an international airport.

The right car for the perfect trip to Brașov or its surroundings can be rented through the Perpetoo.com car rental platform with pick-up and drop-off areas at the Train Station, the Center and as soon as possible at the International Airport.

Timișoara

It is a city on the rise. Like Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara benefits from an international airport and multiple air connections. Timișoara also has a great advantage that it must take advantage of: in 2023 it is the Cultural Capital of Europe! Recently, international chain hotels, such as Radisson Blu, Ibis or Mercure, have also been inaugurated here.

Oradea

It is probably the revelation of the last 10 years. In addition to the advantage of being on the western border of Romania and having a recently modernized airport, Oradea also stands out for its proximity to the Băile Felix resort. Investments in tourism alone, for Oradea, amount to 50 million euros, of which 2 million euros were invested only for the rehabilitation of the Central Market. Among the most important completed projects is the restoration of the Oradea Citadel, the most important tourist attraction in the city, a project worth over 19 million euros. In numbers, it can be summarized as follows: an area of over 25,000 square meters of rehabilitated buildings and 306 landscaped buildings.

The newest star of the city is Aquaparc Nymphea, the most complex and modern project of its kind, set up on an area of 6.7 ha. It is the largest public investment of this kind in Romania, with a value of over 20 million euros.

The public-private partnership is the recipe that also worked in the case of the restoration, in the smallest details and with a budget of 1.5 million euros, of the Zion Synagogue. Located on the banks of the Criş river, it was built in the 19th century, when Oradea had more than 25% of the population of the Mosaic rite. The Oradea Zoo is also on the list of tourist attractions, which was also the subject of a renovation process, with a budget of over 4.5 million euros. Oradea is the only town in Romania that is part of the Art Nouveau network, along with Barcelona, Nancy, Vienna or Budapest.

In Oradea, cars can be rented through the car rental platform directly from verified local owners - Perpetoo.com.

Constanța

It is attractive due to its proximity to the resort of Mamaia, part of the Constanța municipality, and the fact that it is on the Black Sea coast. Constanța also attracts a lot with music events such as Neversea or Sunwaves. In addition, Constanța can be considered a resort town, as it has recently widened and modernized beaches.

The Dolphinarium, the Aquarium, the Casino (renovated), the tourist port, the seafront, the National Museum of History and Archeology in Ovidiu Square, the Museum of the Romanian Navy, the statue of Ovidius or the Roman edifice with mosaics are just some of the city's attractions. Last but not least, the queen of the Coast, the Mamaia resort, is a component of the Constanța municipality.

In Constanța, cars can be rented through Perpetoo.com – the innovative car rental service directly from verified local owners.

Iași

Some of the visitors to Iași have begun to discover the city as a city break destination, not just for business and concerts. A large part of the center of the capital of Moldova region is restored, and the Palas urban complex, which also includes the Palace of Culture, represents, in many’s opinion, the most beautiful urban landscape in Romania. The Church of the Three Hierarchs, the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paraschiva, Bojdeuca lui Ion Creangă, Copou Park or the Botanical Garden are just some of the attractions of this historical and cultural city. Iasi is a bohemian city, where you always feel in love.

In Iași, cars can be rented through the Perpetoo.com rent a car service, with drop-off areas at the Airport, Train Station or Center.

Suceava

Capital of Bucovina region, it is in itself a tourist but also a business city. Among the most important tourist attractions in Suceava are the Suceava Citadel, the Simion Florea Marian Memorial House, the Zamca Medieval Complex, the Ruins of the Royal Palace, the Bucovinean Village Museum, the Zamca Monastery, the Ethnographic Museum "Han Donmesc", Planetarium, Central Park and Arbore Church.

Also, starting from Suceava, you can visit the surrounding monasteries, places of worship dating back to medieval times, which have been inscribed on UNESCO's International Cultural Heritage List since 1993, thanks to their uniqueness and artistic value.

Some of these religious monuments are: Putna Monastery, Voroneţ Monastery (famous for its “blue of Voroneţ”), Suceviţa Monastery, Moldoviţa Monastery, Gura Humorului Monastery (also known thanks to the “red of Humor”, a predominant and unique color used to paint this place of cult) and Arbore Monastery (with the “green of Arbore”).
